The 6-Step Approach to environmental management
Our commitment is to develop an environmentally sustainable logistics network
As the world's leading logistics provider, Deutsche Post DHL takes its responsibilities towards the environment very seriously. We recognise environmental protection in general, and climate protection in particular, as areas where we should, and indeed can, make important contributions.
Therefore, the Group has developed a cohesive but flexible approach to environmental management, called the Deutsche Post DHL 6-Step Approach. In June 2006, the Board of Management approved the implementation of the 6-Step Approach for all the Group's Business Units and regions.
The Deutsche Post DHL 6-Step Approach
The 6-Step Approach to environmental management provides a general global framework with a focus on tackling the most important environmental risks and issues.
It was especially designed for our Express and Logistics businesses. Through the 6-step process all Business Units in all countries are able to take logical steps towards implementing a formal Environmental Management System. Due to its flexibility, it allows countries to work on different levels according to local demands leaving room for innovative country initiatives.
How it works
Step 1 provides the basis for an Environmental Management System, beginning with the adoption of an environmental policy and the appointment of an environmental contact person.
Step 2 embodies minimum standards such as routines for emergency preparedness and basic environmental training for staff.
Step 3 entails the consolidation of environmental management by integrating environmental goals into the overall business plan and the identification of key environmental performance indicators.
Step 4 includes achieving ISO 14001 certification as a key milestone. Environmental communication is now an integral part of the company communication plan. Eco/ safety driving and other schemes are being introduced in order to further enhance environmental performance.
Step 5 states that with a complete and certified Environmental Management System in place, the focus shifts to foresight and communication. A key activity is finding new innovative "green" customer solutions. Community involvement, sponsorship and research programs are part of the stakeholder cooperation program.
Step 6 describes our vision of having a sustainable Deutsche Post DHL network in place which takes the three aspects of social, economic and environmental into account when making business decisions.
By implementing the Deutsche Post DHL 6-Step Approach we minimize risks, we contribute to the well-being of society and to environmental protection, we increase awareness of environmental management through internal communication and education campaigns, and we develop best business opportunities for our customers (see our climate protection program GoGreen
